    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: 1444/1477, suit of formedon in the descender; This suit is in the National Archives Court of Common Pleas rolls. In 1444 there is an initial suit by John Laton to recover two messuages in North Cowton from Christina, widow of John Welbank, and John Welbank. They would have been given to a relative of John Laton when she married the late John Welbank, for the benefit of their heirs. After she died John Welbank had their use for life, and had apparently married again and had a son, but on his death they were supposed to revert to the original giver or his heirs. John Laton as the heir, sued for their return. In 1477 the messuages had not been returned and John Laton had died and Christopher Boynton had seized the messuages on behalf of Robert Laton, son of John. Robert Laton is described as an "armiger" ie he has the right to a coat of arms. Although the late John Welbank was not an armiger, he had enough standing to be considered a suitable husband for a woman from the Laton family (probably John Laton's sister). John Laton of Sexhowe died in 1467 and was succeeded by his son Robert Laton of Sexhowe, who died in 1480. work in progress: pres fuit [was] vic qdl tum quidam Johes Laton nuper [lately] in Cur [administration] H sexti [sixth] nuper de fid [faith] et non de inre Regis [King] Angl apud [among] Westm scilt tame sti. Notes:

    Birth:
He had recently died in 1444, and had an adult son from a second marriage, as said son was occupying a messuage in his own right. So was born more than 42 years earlier.

Possibly not originally from North Cowton, since he acquired the messuages there on marriage to his first wife.

John de Welbank, also in the database, was a juror on an inquisition post-mortem at Sledmere in 1405. Possibly the same man, before his marriage?

John married Laton in 1410?. died before 1418. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John married Christina before 1419. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. John Welbank was born about 1415 in North Cowton.
