    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: Excise officers; They collected taxes and duties, including intercepting smugglers. They were frequently moved so they weren't as prone to corruption, so they have children born in different places. A surveyor probably also refers to an excise officer. They travelled on horseback carrying two pistols, as many people were hostile to them. It was apparently quite a well-paid steady job. This doesn't explain why there were so many called Wellbank at this time and place. Perhaps some of them are the same person? Also possibly includes some Wallbanks who are common in Lancashire.
    • Occupation: 1825; Surveyor (at his wedding)
    • Note: 1832, Lancashire Quarter Sessions; Recognizance for Matthew Wellbank of Portland Street, Manchester, fishmonger, to keep the peace. Lancashire Archives QSB/1/1832/Oct/pt8/47
    • Occupation: 1847; fishmonger (at wedding of his son James). Matthew Wellbank, fishmonger, at Portland St Manchester 1826, 1829, 1832, 1833. Paying rent on a shop at Portland St in 1829 (rate books). So this looks like 2 different Matthew Welbanks in Manchester in 1825, further research needed. Matthew, fishmonger, is the father of James, warehouseman, whose son Matthew goes to California and his children are textile workers in Chester City, PA, with descendants living today. James, shopkeeper, is probably a different James. Matthew, surveyor, could be the son of John, Excise Officer who married Elizabeth in Cheshire. He is the husband of Elizabeth Maddocks and could be the father of Ann. There was another excise officer in Salford, Thomas Welbank, contemporary with John. His son John is baptised in Manchester cathedral 3 Oct 1813, wife Margaret. John is buried on 26 Oct 1813 at St Mary, Prestwich, abode is given as Salford. A Thomas Wellbank was buried 11 Jun 1816 at St Mary, Ulverstone, age 36. And another excise officer, William Wellbank, had a daughter Sarah baptised at the same church on 5 Mar 1815. Wife Margaret, abode Ulverstone. A 1-year old daughter Sarah was buried the day after. Then Charles Wellbank age 26 was buried at St Patrick, Toxteth, 17 Mar 1829, and Margaret Amelia Wellbank age 1 was buried in the same grave on 6 May of the same year. (Looks like he's Wallbank on his marriage records though),
