Christopher Welbank, St Vincent

• Note: It is speculative that Christopher born in 1761 in Aldborough is the same man as Christopher Welbank, cooper of St Vincent. In his Will he says that he has a brother John with no children and a brother Richard with two sons and two daughters. And his brother Richard vouched for his son Richard Thomas joining the Madras Infantry. This suggests that Richard had some standing in society. People with standing in society would leave records eg Wills and newspaper announcements of marriages and deaths. It seems unlikely that there was another Richard with the same family configuration and standing in society as Richard Welbank of The Tower, but there are no records of him, his children, or his brother John.
• Occupation: Cooper in his Majesties Office of Ordnance.
• Note: 27 Mar 1817, Kingstown, St Vincent; Record of 21 slaves owned by Christopher
• Note: 1822 and 1825, Kingstown. St Vincent; similar records of slaves. The death rate is notable. In 1822, 4 have died in the last five years, aged 37, 38, 35 and 35. In 1825, another has died, age 29.
• Note: 1826, St Vincent; Will of Christopher Welbank, Cooper to His Majesty's Ordnance in the Island of Saint Vincent of Kings Town , Island of Saint Vincent. 12 Nov 1826 PROB 11/1718
• Note: 28 Jan 1828, Kingstown, St Vincent; Record of slaves owned and sold or manumitted by the Estate of Christopher. 5 were manumitted and 2 sold to Mr Storot.

I Christopher Welbank of Kings Town in the Isaland of St Vincent cooper to his Majesty's Ordnance in this Island being of sound and disposing? mind... I give devise and bequeath unto my Son Thomas Richard Welbank now in the Army stationed in the East Indies the sum of ffive thousand five hundred pounds of Sterling money of Great Britain to be paid him by my Executors in twelve months after my decease out of my funded property.
Also I give devise and bequeath to each of my brothers Richard Welbank and John Welbank the sum of five Hundred Pounds apiece of like Sterling money to be paid to them by my Executors...
All of the rest and residue of of my funded property subject to the above.... I give devise and bequeath to my two nephews and my two nieces the children of my brother Richard Welbank.... to be paid to them on their attaining respectively the ages of twenty one years or their days of Marriage....
I give devise and bequeath unto William Storot his heirs and assigns all that my part of Lot Number Sixty Seven in Kingstown adjoining on or abutting on my present dwelling house and the lot formerly occupied by Peggy Sutherland fronting Long Court and bounded Northerly by the lot belonging to Dr West? in trust nevertheless for my goddaughter Elizabeth Jane daughter of Grace Ffroderick? until she shall attain the age of twenty one years...
I give devise and bequeath unto Benjamin Frith Hutchins ffifty pounds currency ...
As a mark of my esteem and regard for him I give devise and bequeath my slave Isaac unto the said William Storot ... until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years or thereabouts if complete in a trade when it is my will that the said William Storot his heirs or assigns shall manumit him and that my Executors to pay him the sum of one hundred pounds currency or lay out the same in such a manner as may be most advantageous for him
my executors to manumit and set free my two slaves Rippon a cooper and Guashty? a labourer and to pay to each of them the sum of forty pounds currency in such a manner as may be most advantageous for them
All the rest residue and remainder of all my real and personal Estate lands tenements and Slaves bills bonds Notes Money Plate furniture and other property of what nature and kindsoever and wheresoever situate I give devise and bequeath unto the Honorable Edward Jackson Charles Shophard and William Storot Esquire of Saint Vincent and the survivors of them.... on trust to sell and dispose of the same at and for the best prices that can be got for the same and out of the proceeds thereof to pay satisfy and discharge my debts... and subject thereto I give devise and bequeath one half of such residue unto my son Thomas Richard Welbank and the other half unto my said nephews and nieces the four children of my brother Richard Welbank to be equally divided ....
and I authorise and empower my said Trustees ... to reserve to themselves the power .... of purchasing any portion of my residuary property directed to be sold especially my ... Slaves if they shall be desirous of belonging to any of them...
I the said Christopher Welbank have set and affixed my hand and seal to this my last Will .... at St Vincent this 13th day of April in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Six

1. Richard Thomas Welbank was born in 1801 in St Vincent; was christened on 6 Jan 1801 in KIngstown, St Vincent; died on 14 Jun 1855 in Pau, Pyrenees Atlantiques, France.

• Occupation: currier (noted in parish register christening records of his children).
• Residence: 1783-1799, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; Christopher Welbank appears on land tax records between these dates. In 1802 M Welbank is probably at same address - widow Mary?

Christopher married Mary Dickinson in 1758 in Aldborough, Yorks. Mary was born in 1723; died on 20 Nov 1801 in St Andrew, Aldborough, Yorkshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

• Occupation: 9 May 1719, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; Matthew Halliday apprenticed to George Welbank, cordwainer, of Burrowbridge.

George married Dorothy Snowden on 16 Nov 1712 in St Olaves, Marygate, York. Dorothy died in 1772 in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; was buried on 16 Mar 1772 in Aldborough, Yorkshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

• Note: 9 Jun 1677; Robert Welbanck m Collin Scarlett, Brompton by Northallerton. Also a possibility for his marriage.
