Generation: 1

  1. 1.  George Catterson was born in 1774 in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; was christened on 7 May 1774 in St Andrews, Aldborough, Yorkshire, England (son of Francis Catterson and Eleanor Welbank).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: 1794, Helmsley, Yorks; A George Catterson married Jane Harrison in Helmsley in 1794 and has an interesting descent, He is a tanner and fellmonger at Flemingate, Beverley, son William had a tanning factory employing 35 and had 12 children, one daughter married a very wealthy leather merchant and another married a farmer at Beswick and the family farm the land to this day. However, have not established that it's the same George Catterson. He appears in the census of 1841 with an age of 70, suggesting birth year of 1771. A George Catterson was born in S Kilvington to William on 28 Mar 1769, and would be of age in 1794, so he is a more likely candidate.

George married Jane Harrison on 6 May 1794 in Helmsley, Yorks. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
Possibly a different George, as it would be unusual to marry at 20 and he is quite a long way from Boroughbridge

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Francis Catterson was born in 1748 in Thirsk, Yorkshire (son of William Catterson).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: 1779, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; plumber and glazier - takes apprentice John Laycock
    • Residence: 1808, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; Land tax records. His brother Thomas seems to be living in the next property whose tax is slightly lower.

Francis married Eleanor Welbank on 5 Mar 1772 in St Andrews, Aldborough, Yorkshire, England. Eleanor (daughter of Robert Welbank and Elizabeth Gray) was born in 1747 in York, Yorkshire England; died in 1824 in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Eleanor Welbank was born in 1747 in York, Yorkshire England (daughter of Robert Welbank and Elizabeth Gray); died in 1824 in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: She married in Aldborough in 1772 and Christopher Welbank was a witness, but there is no record of her birth. She must be his close relative, but he isn't likely to be her father as he would have been 17 when she was born, I have made the assumption that she is the child of Robert, his cousin, cooper of York.. He had recently married and a son had just died, in the year she was born, so quite plausible he would have a child of her age. He had died in 1766, before she married.

    Notes:

Archbishop of York Marriage Licences Index 1613-1839 gives her age on marriage as 25

  1. 4.  William Catterson

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Thirsk, Yorkshire; glazier
    • Note: 20 Feb 1714, Thirsk; Thomas Catterson de Kilvington,, Yeoman, married Elizabeth Scurr of Thirsk. roughly the right year to be William's parents. William had another son, Thomas, who was also a plumber in Boroughbridge. He had several children, some of whom have the same names as Francis' children, which makes it confusing to trace Francis' and Eleanor's descendants.
