Lawsuit, Hillary sessions, Richmond. John Welbank along with several other men from surrounding villages is charged with trespass against Christopher Boynton. This is presumably most likely to be John Welbank the younger, as John Welbank the elder had recently died in 1444.

Christopher Boynton through his attorney Thomas Thornburgh .... versus John Smithson of Gilling in the aforesaid county husbandman Ricud Efych of Gilling...slater John Prestman of Barton....husbandman.....John Welbank of Cowton in the aforesaid county husbandman...... to plead why with force and arms they broke into the close and home of the same Christopher of Barton Cowton Leyburn and Middleton Dyas and took and carried away goods and chattels to the value of ten pounds and consumed and laid waste his grass formerly flourishing to the value of twenty pounds and other outrages and serious damage and contrary to the peace of the realm

There is a suit of Formedon Descender against Christine Welbank widow of John Welbank, and John Welbank, in Richmond. They each are in possession of one messuage in North Coweton, which were held by the late John Welbank for life but on his death should revert to John Laton. It doesn't specify that John Welbank is the son of the late John Welbank, but it seems likely that he is.

| There is a follow-up to the formedon descender lawsuit. John Laton has died and Christopher Boynton is occupying the disputed land on behalf of his son Robert Laton. (Christopher Boynton is the son of the Christopher Boynton who sued John Welbank for trespass in 1444). |
