• Note: It is speculative that Christopher born in 1761 in Aldborough is the same man as Christopher Welbank, cooper of St Vincent. In his Will he says that he has a brother John with no children and a brother Richard with two sons and two daughters. And his brother Richard vouched for his son Richard Thomas joining the Madras Infantry. This suggests that Richard had some standing in society. People with standing in society would leave records eg Wills and newspaper announcements of marriages and deaths. It seems unlikely that there was another Richard with the same family configuration and standing in society as Richard Welbank of The Tower, but there are no records of him, his children, or his brother John.

• Note: The problem here is to work out which of the many Christophers in England around that time was our Christopher who married Ann Knapp. I am pretty confident that this Christopher is the direct ancestor of all Welbanks in England today. His family with Ann Knapp are well documented as our branch.

• Note: 30 Jun 1760, ; Welbank Christopher the younger of Hatton Garden Middx gent [completes articles with] Christopher Welbank the elder of Hatton Garden gent. 5 years 30th June 1760. (Kings Bench, Registers of Affidavits of Due Execution, National Archives KB170/14) Christopher of Southampton Buildings is presumably Christopher the Younger. The same address and name suggests they were relatives. Christopher Welbank of Mount Pleasant Northallerton (1720-93) lived at Hatton Garden. He is a likely candidate for Christopher the Elder. At the moment Christopher, his older brother's son, is the most likely candidate for Christopher the Younger, as a fairly close relative who is the right age to complete articles in 1760 (at a pinch: he would have been articled in 1755, at age 12). So Christopher (new) Welbank has been given the birth details of Christopher of Mount Pleasant's nephew. On the other hand the record doesn't state that the two Christophers are nephew and uncle, so Christopher the Younger might be a related Christopher who doesn't appear in the parish records.

Welbank agrees he didn't inform Price because they are not getting along, and admits he hasn't paid all the proceeds over, although he assures the court that he will do so shortly.

Frances gets a small mahogany bureau, a watch, earrings necklaces jewellery and "all the best of my wearing apparel" silks laces muslins and linen. Richard Welbank gets a bed, hangings, feather bed bolster and pillow, sheets blankets two small counterpanes and a large chest with two drawers at the bottom. James Welbank gets a large mahogany bureau, plate, damask tablecloths, Huckaback towels, a china punchbowl, etc, the residue to be sold and equally divided between James, Richard and Frances (?? Mary left out):: James and Richard Welbank to be the executors. Funeral expenses not to exceed £15.

Notices in the Daily Universal Register of the 24th and 26th June 1786, from Christopher regretting that he can't canvass the voters due to sudden illness, then notices from Ann Welbank announcing his death and suggesting the voters choose a candidate who is prepared to pay her an allowance out of the income. However, they chose the man who had already been filling in for the former coroner during his terminal illness, who had declined to pay her anything.

He also says she had daughters, which is odd. ' I went to Mrs Welbank, Albany Street, to dine with William Gregg - Dr Gardner was there - Mrs Welbank has a Red Nose. - Now, when I say red, I do not mean to say that it is covered with that soft downy, velvety light substance that I often have seen and felt on thine, composed of a Bloom of pure White, with a thought of vermillion - Not I - I Infer that the strongest decoction of the little Insect called cochenille would only be a very poor color compared with the Truly red colored Nose of the Lady here mention - This redness extends from the center of the ridge, off and over the cheeks, the forehead, & the chin in rich profusion, and along with the Cap, the Ribbands and the Dress, I thought that Nothing so very red had ever met my Eye before - She is aimiable, however, and so are her Daughters and so, Lucy, never mind the Color!' • Note: 1804; testified in sensational trial Dighton v Watts involving his future brother-in-law Godfrey's wife. Mrs Godfrey Hirst and her sister Mrs Dighton were in the habit of scandalously going to theatre alone, and had met two soldiers and eloped to Ripon with them. Mr Dighton sued Mr Watts for alienation of affections, asking for damages of £5000, but the defendant's lawyer argued that Mrs Dighton already had a poor reputation so Mr Watts had not been the one to cause damage to her husband. "I understand they [Mrs Godfrey Hirst and Mrs Dighton] are now following a life of direful infamy" Numerous witnesses testify to Mrs Dighton's and Mrs Hirst's scandalous ways. William Welbank esq testified in the trial on behalf of Mr Dighton, who he said had always shown affectionate regard to his wife. The jury awarded damages of £1,100. The trial was written up in Sporting Magazine: or, Monthly Calendar of the transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and Every Other Diversion Interesting to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprize, and Spirit, (Volume 24, Rogerson & Tuxford, 1804) so probably was widely read about with great fascination. John Gough Nichols describes them as "the unfortunate Hirst family" and says they have lost all pretensions to respectability by mixing with plebian blood and low persons. Mary Anne also had a brother Francis who inherited the Golden Lion Inn and partnered with a "low person" and had eight illegitimate children with her before eventually being persuaded to marry her in his demented final years.

(the Topographer and Genealogist Vol 1, John Gough Nichols, 1846, which says that Francis had eight illegitimate children by a "low person" and brought the family into disrepute). An ironmonger in Hull, Jonathan Hirst, was a bankrupt in 1829 (the Gazette) and had changed address several times.

Together with his wife, subscribed to a book of sermons published 1839. Mrs Gaskell was also a follower and mentions Mrs Welbank as a friend in one of her letters. HIs brother-in-law Thomas Mitchell, nephew Edward Dawson Welbank Mitchell, niece Janetta Bishop Mitchell, and sister Jane seem also to have been followers of Rev Turner, lived in Newcastle where he was based and moved to Manchester where he moved when he retired, and were all buried in the Unitarian Chapel in Manchester where he was also buried.

THE TOWER - (From a Correspondent) - The first disinterment from the Tower burial-ground took place on Saturday last, when the mortal remains of several relatives of Lieutenant-General Dickinson, Royal Artillery, were thence removed to the new churchyard, Lee, Kent. The coffins were conveyed in a hearse, and deposited in a vault previously prepared for their reception. Two relatives of the General, the Rev W Ludlow and Mr R Welbank, superintended the removal, and accompanied the remains. We understand this rude, perhaps cruel, disturbance, has arisen from the alleged necessity of appropriating that which was formerly a burial-ground as the site for a portion of the projected new barracks.

Some of the details are not quite right. It says he was 49, born in Patras, and was a Captain in the East India Company (not a Lieutentant). Nevertheless there are no other men called Welbank in their records, and his father-in-law sought to recover the money settled on his first wife soon after this death.

The book uncovers some of the mysteries of Mrs. Gaskell's key relationships, most notably concerning Miss Mitchell, who has previously been misidentified in the Gaskell biography. Given Mrs. Gaskell's statement that Miss Mitchell was one of the two principal influences in her life, a deeper understanding of this shadowy presence and the figures around her is vital to our understanding of the author. However, the Miss Mitchell mentioned repeatedly in Mrs. Gaskell's letters was in fact Rosa's much older sister, Janetta Bishop Mitchell. Janetta, born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1791, is further shown to have been a confidante not only of Mrs. Gaskell but also of Harriet Martineau. Miss Mitchell is mentioned in Harriet Martineau's early letters in the 1820s - working in Norwich from 1821-25, Janetta became close to both Harriet and her mother and remained in contact with them when Harriet gained literary prominence in the 1830s. Janetta Mitchell's fascinating and itinerant life is charted, demonstrating her close links to Unitarian communities across England. Janetta was an example of the many sophisticated women with few material resources who, despite remaining unmarried and culturally invisible, nevertheless found their own paths in 19th-century society. However, have not established that it's the same George Catterson. He appears in the census of 1841 with an age of 70, suggesting birth year of 1771. A George Catterson was born in S Kilvington to William on 28 Mar 1769, and would be of age in 1794, so he is a more likely candidate.

He would have been 16. 18 Aug 1803 John Westoby Palmer has declined his retail business as a linen draper in York in favour of William Welbank. • Note: 1804; testified in sensational trial Dighton v Watts involving his future brother-in-law Godfrey's wife. Mrs Godfrey Hirst and her sister Mrs Dighton were in the habit of scandalously going to theatre alone, and had met two soldiers and eloped to Ripon with them. Mr Dighton sued Mr Watts for alienation of affections, asking for damages of £5000, but the defendant's lawyer argued that Mrs Dighton already had a poor reputation so Mr Watts had not been the one to cause damage to her husband. "I understand they [Mrs Godfrey Hirst and Mrs Dighton] are now following a life of direful infamy" Numerous witnesses testify to Mrs Dighton's and Mrs Hirst's scandalous ways. William Welbank esq testified in the trial on behalf of Mr Dighton, who he said had always shown affectionate regard to his wife. The jury awarded damages of £1,100. The trial was written up in Sporting Magazine: or, Monthly Calendar of the transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and Every Other Diversion Interesting to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprize, and Spirit, (Volume 24, Rogerson & Tuxford, 1804) so probably was widely read about with great fascination. John Gough Nichols describes them as "the unfortunate Hirst family" and says they have lost all pretensions to respectability by mixing with plebian blood and low persons. Mary Anne also had a brother Francis who inherited the Golden Lion Inn and partnered with a "low person" and had eight illegitimate children with her before eventually being persuaded to marry her in his demented final years.

Francis Hirst was the landlord of the Golden Lion in Northallerton. Another brother Henry was a solicitor in Northallerton, Jonathan was in business in Hull, Edwin was a farmer. (the Topographer and Genealogist Vol 1, John Gough Nichols, 1846, which says that Francis had eight illegitimate children by a "low person" and brought the family into disrepute). An ironmonger in Hull, Jonathan Hirst, was a bankrupt in 1829 (the Gazette) and had changed address several times.

The book uncovers some of the mysteries of Mrs. Gaskell's key relationships, most notably concerning Miss Mitchell, who has previously been misidentified in the Gaskell biography. Given Mrs. Gaskell's statement that Miss Mitchell was one of the two principal influences in her life, a deeper understanding of this shadowy presence and the figures around her is vital to our understanding of the author. Miss Mitchell is mentioned in Harriet Martineau's early letters in the 1820s - working in Norwich from 1821-25, Janetta became close to both Harriet and her mother and remained in contact with them when Harriet gained literary prominence in the 1830s. Janetta Mitchell's fascinating and itinerant life is charted, demonstrating her close links to Unitarian communities across England. Janetta was an example of the many sophisticated women with few material resources who, despite remaining unmarried and culturally invisible, nevertheless found their own paths in 19th-century society. According to publicity material included with the vessels, he invented it to cook "porridge to perfection" as it would stick to the bottom and burn in an ordinary saucepan, but if it was cooked in a bain-marie it didn't quite get hot enough. His solution was to put a lightly pressurised jacket around the cooking vessel, filled with water boiling at higher temperature than 100C. The vessels were heavily promoted as good for healthy cooking, suitable for schools and hospitals, needing little supervision so ideal for families without servants or single people living alone with just a Primus stove for cooking, and so on.

Notes:

Richard and Alice appear to have lived at 7 Alexandra Road, Heigham, Norwich after their marriage in 1879, at least until 1883, although there seems to be toing and froing from the Broughton Road, Banbury residence. Richard attended a Presbyterian training course in Nottingham at one point. Four of the children did not survive.


Richard William invented and manufactured the 'Welbank Boilerette'; a device for cooking vegetables without large quantities of water. One of his Boilerettes can be seen in the Science Museum, London.


He built the devices at his works in North Newington, Banbury. As a keen Presbyterian, he maintained a printing press at the works and sold the devices accompanied by printed religious tracts.
