Some of the details are not quite right. It says he was 49, born in Patras, and was a Captain in the East India Company (not a Lieutentant). Nevertheless there are no other men called Welbank in their records, and his father-in-law sought to recover the money settled on his first wife soon after this death.

Richard married Margaret Sophia Allen on 1 Jul 1828 (Licence) in Bathwick St Mary,Somerset, England.. Margaret (daughter of John Lee Allen and Louisa Ainslie) was born on 13 Sep 1806 in Errol, Perth, Scotland; died on 11 Jun 1831 in Cannanore, India; was buried in Errol Parish Church Graveyard. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Richard married Hermine Sieber on 15 Jan 1838 in St Stephen, Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria. Hermine (daughter of Anton Sieber and Theresia V Ritter) was born on 9 May 1818 in Vienna. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 4

  1. 4.  Anthony Welbank Descendancy chart to this point (3.Natalie3, 2.Richard2, 1.Mary1) was born about 1866 in Montpollin, Pays de Loire, France; died on 28 Jan 1941 in Brentford, Middx. Age 75 (BMD Jan-Feb-Mar 1941).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Note: Although not conclusive, I believe Anthony was distantly related to the current UK Welbanks. His mother appears to be the daughter of Richard Thomas Welbank, who was in the Madras Army before resigning and living in France. His father Christopher Welbank lived in St Vincent and was a slave owner. Christopher had two fairly distinguished brothers, John, who was a surgeon, and Richard, who was a civil servant and lived in the Tower of London. Christopher was born in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Robert all worked in the shoemaking trade. The UK Welbanks are descended from a younger son of Robert's.

    • Note: 1919, Finsbury & Fulham; Electoral Register 184 Bishops Road: de Guirandon, Natalie and Welbank, Anthony.
    • Note: 9 Sep 1941; Appears his mother's maiden name was Welbank, and her father was Welbank, thought by his neighbours to be an English Field Marshal. I wonder if he was Richard Thomas Welbank, who left the Madras Army in 1834 and died in France in 1855; Natalie was born in 1838 in Saxony. Have now found Nathalie's baptism in Dresden; her father's name is given as Richard Welbank. I have also found Richard Thomas' death notice in the Pau Archives; his wife was called Hermine Siebec; they married in Vienna in 1838, the same year Natalie was born; Natalie's middle name is Hermine which is supportive but not conclusive.
